“We now have a private cloud environment that can scale with our data demands but keeps our infrastructure manageable and costs predictable. We have the tools to look at data growth and how much space is needed, as well as being able to save money.”

The opportunity.
Lanyon Bowdler is an award-winning, multi-disciplinary law firm with offices throughout Shropshire and Herefordshire. It is one of the largest legal practices in the region with 23 partners and over 200 experienced staff working across five office locations. Lanyon Bowdler has seen a dramatic change in the way the firm receives and manages data from its clients and associates. With the move toward digital, paper-based documents are now also delivered in electronic formats and the firm routinely handles video files, graphically intensive files such as medical scans and clients to share file information electronically. When the opportunity arose to refresh the firm’s IT environment to support an office move, the IT manager at Lanyon Bowdler, looked for a solution that would enable the firm to support its current and future data demands more cost-effectively and efficiently. To support the design and delivery of its strategic IT refresh project, Lanyon Bowdler selected Cetus Solutions as its IT infrastructure partner. The Cetus team worked with Lanyon Bowdler to architect and deploy a data centre solution that would give the firm the room to scale its infrastructure to handle increased data demands and migrate the firm’s users and existing applications seamlessly to the new environment.

“Working with Cetus Solutions enabled us to refresh our IT environment in less than 6 months. We have successfully moved our business to a more agile infrastructure and have been able to reduce our total cost of ownership.”

The solution.
As part of its IT refresh, Lanyon Bowdler upgraded and deployed Citrix XenServer to virtualise the firm’s server environment. Citrix XenApp was used to deliver some of the firm’s core line of business applications, with Citrix Netscaler providing users with secure remote access capabilities. Due to some local processing requirements for applications such as digital dictation software the firm supports a hybrid end-user computing environment of virtual desktops, workstations and laptops. Two storage-area networks were deployed to consolidate the firm’s storage requirements and to provide off-site replication. Lanyon had a lot of data sitting locally at its branch offices and the SANs enabled the firm to centralise its storage to provide better visibility and simplify its backup capabilities. To support increasing demands for file sharing between staff and clients, Cetus Solutions deployed Citrix ShareFile, which allows the firm to securely store, share and sync documents. Citrix CloudBridge was also used for WAN optimisation to ensure consistent quality of service to branch offices in rural areas where limited bandwidth is a challenge.

The result.
The flexibility of the storage solution allows the team to allocate different types of data to different parts of the SAN for optimum cost-efficiency. Cheaper storage can be used for data that is archived, while databases that require a high-speed of input can be allocated to flash. The de-duplication functions of the SAN also help to make data growth more manageable.

“By relocating the data to the central storage system we can back up in seconds, multiple times throughout the day. We now have the ability to recover systems in about 30 minutes, rather than the 5-6 hours it took previously,” explained the IT manager. If one of our staff loses a document or wants to revert back to an earlier version we can go back to previous documents and recover it in minutes, this is something that is hugely valuable to staff.”
